Critical Conversations:
An Oral History of the Cross-Cultural Center at California State University San Marcos
Programs
From its inception, the Cross-Cultural Center used programming as a means to develop cultural competencies, especially multicultural competency, explore advocacy and activism, engage across social identity groups, and increase retention of underrepresented and underserved students. (Floyd Lai discusses programming at the CCC, as well as their focus) The first program put on by the Cross-Cultural Center was A Celebration of Culture, September 2003, which celebrated CSUSM’s diversity and built community. A Celebration of Culture contained performances by the Vista Buddhist Temple Shokenji Taiko group, as well as remarks by Dr. Dilcie Perez, Dr. Karen Haynes (CSUSM President 2004-2019), and Dr. Gregory Toya.
Pictured here is a handout advertising the Celebration of Culture event.
